A close friend works in HR at a medium size Tech company. He said even when they post openings, they already know who they want. They are just covering themselves legally. He said they send recruiters to top colleges . They want fresh grads. They don’t even want you in your late 20’s. I’m not in tech, not smart enough, lol. Good luck to everyone. Hope things change

sounds obvious but you really have to keep your skill set tuned to the market. sales is always chicken or feathers. in a sw dev role these days devops is very marketable. i kept my skills up to date over the years and learned voice and data networking, virtualization, storage, devops, etc. knowing how to set up and run a CI/CD pipeline, maintain build automation, understanding containerization and its associated orchestration, etc will keep you employed these days. i just retired after 42 years in "tech" of all types and never had a problem finding a job even when getting laid off during the great recession and in the middle of covid. some of those jobs did suck though but they paid the bills.

I can't speak for juniors just starting out but being in the field for around 10 yrs I have decided to be more proactive about applying for a job. My advice is to take control of your fate as much as you can. For example, don't just send your resume out to any ol job you see. Go out of your way to research and find the places you want to work for. Find the places that really excite you. Then tailor your resume and/or cover Letter and apply directly. Find ways to get their attention. If you get the interview put together great interview questions for them. Find out who you are gonna be working for. You spend a significant chunk of your life in your career. Make sure you KNOW who you are working for. Another example is remote work opened up a plethora of options, which at face value looks like a gold mine. But it's way too overwhelming and unrealistic to me. I'd rather limit my search within a certain radius of where I live. #1 because less options is better. #2 I like to maintain a sense of community by helping businesses in my area. I like remote, but my rule of thumb is if I can't drive there every once in a while, unless I relocate, it's too far away to be working at. Then I research companies, cities and salaries within this radius to find out where the higher paying jobs are to narrow it down even further. I like the subtractive intentional approach.

When I first started getting interested in web dev jobs 2016-17 the market was wide open and roles were specific, frontend, backend, db, devops. I was on the grind for many years, delivering food while studying, pizza man, the whole 9 yards. The end of 2022 I landed my first job as a web dev. It took years of commitment, and rejection. I’m coming up to 2 years working there. I would say the main difference nowadays is that there is no separation of frontend and backend roles. You are expected to figure out how to do everything now. The term fullstack used to be a joke but now it’s the opposite. Salaries have dipped quite a bit too. It’s not common for devs to get a 70k 80k average salary unlike 2019 110k+.

My take is this. AI is not the biggest issue here. Having coded with ChatGPT since it came out and other AI tools increase in productivity is honestly around 15-20% tops and it has not improved much since its release. What truly happened was after mass exodus in Twitter, it is still very much here. As Elon said it turns out you don’t need that many people to run it. Other companies and more specifically their investors realized the same and decided to cut unreasonable high number of engineers they never needed to begin with. They were massively hiring before because of fear of losing engineers as job hopping was very prevalent in this industry. Add outsourcing to that and that’s your nail in the coffin. It will be tough unless startups start booming again.

I'm a junior frontend/fullstack, I started working last year in June until they let me go in December (because there ended up 4 frontenders on the same team). It was a great experience while it lasted, but in October I got the worst hand forearm cramp ever and my hand is recovering now but it's still limp. I'm still very young, few years in my 20s left but damn it's giving me like an RSI experience for the last 10 months, and I expected yeah this thing is going to have to take ? 1 or 2 years to recover (limp hand), I truly flexed my forearm way too hard and lost and am in a healing process with my hand. But it feels better now it's just a bit more tedious/fatiguing (hand) if I am going to start working full time again

This is awesome.. I’m a hill billy as well that went into tech from the sawmill industry. Tech is the way it is at the meta level because of large corporations and the culture that allowed it to get that way. Much of big tech is comprised of eastern mindsets so their struggles don’t get my sympathy and sadly many people like us and other Americans simply not getting into the sciences. With that being said, it’s actually the greatest time to be in technology if you can start your own business and land a few gigs but that all comes down to knowing people and having a social life. As a good ole boy I’ve built small apps for plenty of small real estate, dirt work businesses, machine shops etc. but because most US nerds are just PC gamers that dungeon dwell they have nothing else going for them and to your point it’s their fault. In conclusion, I think this shake up is exactly what the industry and culture needed 10 years ago. Stay out of tech from a fellow TN hill Billy <3

Its a small company and they told me I performed well, and will hire me if they can, but they are restructuring the company right now. But they will let me know soon, told me to hold on to the work computer for the time being. If I actually get an offer, would be the biggest hole in one of all time. If I dont, well, I dunno, Im hoping that having a 5 month internship might help me fund a junior position somewhere, or at least perhaps another internship. If all else fails, I will resume my old life of being a ditch digger.

At that point, I ask it to provide details to get a more thorough understanding. It's basically a feedback loop where I test my own understanding, ask Chat GPT, and improve my understanding with its responses in order to ask it better questions to further improve my understanding.

The tech industry is really bad at the moment. I changed my goal's from focusing on becoming a programmer to something within my industry. So, at the moment I am learning my 3rd spoken language and researching other possibilities by doing so. I still program but now as a hobby, figured. Great video by the way and wish you the best.

I'm employed but was looking for a job because my current job is pretty meh. NOPE. Market is pretty bad. My observations: - Salaries are going *down*, even if you compare to like 2019, before COVID/hiring boom ("Great Resignation" era). Sub 6-figs senior roles are not unheard of. At a time of record inflation this is truly disturbing. - Remote jobs are outrageously competitive. Non-remote you'd have a much better chance. If I was laid off, my strategy to get a new job would be something local

Bought some ng well royalties, now waiting for interest rates to drop and drilling to recommence. Work on some writing. Maybe work on a SaaS. Travel to Europe to save on spending...US is so overpriced.

@@TKGZONE I recommend working on a coding project so that you have something to show for your down time. Contribute to an open source project, or create a game, could be anything. If you get deep into the project it will also help you to find a new job, because you will have some insight into the cutting edge of a particular niche. I think you will get better results by being active in a particular niche and applying to the small number of jobs related to it than by applying to tons of less targeted jobs.
